Not so Smelly Pwllheli !!

When I was little, we went to Pwllheli in Wales. It rained all day and we only visited the holiday park there, and saw none of the stunning countryside or anythign like that. As typical Brits we had no idea how to pronounce the town name and attempted it as 'Perthelly'. So after our dire, wet and grim day out, it was henceforth known as Smelly Perthelly - poor Pwllheli!!
So firstly, I need to apologise to all North Welsh people!!!

Especially as I have just discovered the Celtic Herbal Company, based in.....Pwllheli. In fact you could now say Pwllheli IS very smelly !! But in the best way possible!!
I took a little trip on my laptop to lovely North Wales and went to http://www.celtic-herbal.co.uk/, where I found page upon page of lovely soaps, shampoos, body washes, balms, massage oilss and much more.

I ordered some soaps, Sweet Pea, Rosemary and Seaweed. Plus a new Organic Shower Gel in Lavender and Geranium.
Yummy! With a splendid assault on your nose, these new organic soaps and gels are pampering delights!
Each one contains essential oils and the little catalogue that comes with the order reminds you of all the properties they have - such as the seaweed soap being hydrating and helpful with skin regeneration.
The soaps are 99p for a 20g one, so you can mix and match and for under £20 try the entire range if you so wish!!
My little shower gel was £3.50 and again, totally organic. its s delightful blend of natural oils that cleanse and nourish the skin. Lavender calms and sooths any irritations whilst Geraniumis a natural deodorant and helps to balance skin oils.

As a relaxing and unwinding end to the day it's lovely!
They do fab gift boxes to buy as presents too. The Pure Baby Bathtime looks adorable, and there is a Rose Garden set for ladies, plus a Gardeners Balms for gents. The Lamb and Mint is a humourous addition to the collection too!

Hydration Overhaul

My skin was in need of an overhaul this weekend. Out in the sun all day Saturday, but with lots of wind thrown in for good measure too, my poor old skin was crying out for a treat!

Call in, Neom Luxury Organics! At £28 for 100ml it's not cheap, but once used never forgotten, and I for one will buy again, even at nearly £30!

I have the 'Real Luxury' fragrance - which has Lavender, Jasmine and Brazilian Rosewood in its scent library. Relaxing yet invigorating, ideal for day or night time use.

It sinks into the skin as you massage leaving no oiliness at all. Apparently, the body oil can also be used as a massage oil, but we've not yet tried that. The feeling is divine, when rubbed on the skin though, a real spot of luxury for yourself.

Himself commented (just as he walked in the bedroom one morning) "Oooh have you bought new perfume? It's lovely!" Just as I have massaged my Neom on my legs and arms.

Other fragrances include: Unwind - which is Bergamot, French Lavender and Patchouli and Complete Bliss with Moroccan Blush Rose, Lime and Black Pepper - which sounds gorgeous and may be just the one to try next!!

Each come with a Neom promise; that they use seriously high grade essential oils, no chemicals, parabens, PEGS, silicone, SLS or synthetic fragrances - in fact nothing nasty at all!

A Complete Bum Saver!

As you know Himself has been on a cycling kit purchasing tour, and today’s review is all about his bum, well his new Gel Saddle Cover really.

Only £3.99 from Aldi, an ideal bottom saver. He’s been complaining of a sore bum for some time now!! Well he does do about 14-20 mile a day so what does he expect!!

So for guaranteed comfort whilst you ride, his new gel saddle cover provides instant protection and padding at a low cost.

The cover certainly doesn’t look like it only costs £3.99 ! Having an anti-slip rubber backing and draw string fastening makes it easy to attach. Plus, it’s available in size 270x260, perfect for a touring or city bike and 254x254 for a cruiser or even our large gym bike.

The gel bicycle saddle cover has certainly been a good buy for Himself, and me too cos he’s got a nice bum which needs protecting!

Yummy Scrummy moments on a tour of London

I went to London yesterday - on a media tour for work, if anyone has any blister remedies please call!!

Anyway, on the train, at 9.30am chugging along, I reached into my bag to see what I'd got, as I'd flown the house without breakfast.

I'd picked up a handful of Organic Fairtrade Bars from Boots by Tropical Wholefoods , I've never had them before and thought a trip to London would be made much nicer with a ready supply of nibbles for the journey.

Each bar is 40g and about 150 or so calories depending on the flavour you choose. Pack says they are a good source of fibre and low in salt too. I did find they were 9g of fat per 100g so not suitable for Rosemary Conley fans, but that said they were yummy.

I began by breakfasting with the Banana and Honey version, I thought the bars wold be crunchy and hard work, rather like an Alpen style bar, but they were more chewy and gooey, more like an unhealthy sweetie!! Which makes eating them even more tempting, as you think you're up to no good!

Each one is organic and the flavours I've sampled are Banana and Honey - my current favourite... Mango and Brazil, very nice but I personally probably would not buy again and Date and Walnut - this too was yummy but not as nice as the banana one!

Himself tried the Apricot and Kernel one, we're not sure what a kernel is other than the inside of a nut, but he said he liked the bar anyway and finished it off with gusto.

At 40g they're not going to fill you up all day, but just enough for a gooey snack of sweetness, so in order to keep your saintliness and polish your dieting halo, grab an Tropical Wholefoods Organic Bar instead of some choccy!!! I'm sure you're skin and general insidey bits will thank you for it!

A little excessive for my sunnies!!

I've bought a pack of Clever Cloths. £5.99 from JML - so not cheap for three fluffyish, brightly coloured cloths but OK I thought lets give them a go.

Apparently, according to the marketing you don't need any chemicals, just water and the cloth. Hmmm....OK lets believe that for now and give it a try.

They are impregnated with Silver, which is anti-bacterial, this is locked in the fabric and helps prevent nasty bugs growing. The cloths are a sort of fluffy fabric, which holds the water when mopping up spills.

I began by cleaning all the smears off my sunglasses, they were yukky, OK not a huge challenge for the cloth but they were one pair of grimey sunnies... and became 'as new!' Ooh I like these I thought, and began walking around the house, cloth in one hand and rather strange look on my face - rather like a demented Mrs Mopp.

As I attacked the dining room table and all the accompanying chairs, I was impressed - one super shiny table. I next did the mantlepiece and fireplace, followed by the glass doors on the kitchen cupboards, then the Halogen hob.... there was no stopping me.

I was rather troubled to discover the cloth had became really quite dusty/grimy, we have a very clean house, Himself is a total cleaning freak (he won't mind me saying) so dust settles in our gaf at its own peril! So was very surprised by the cloths grimy appearance indeed!

The cloths are special and need no chemicals added. So no furniture polish, kitchen cleaner or Mr Muscle needed to make these guys work! And work they do!

The pack did contain three cloths, so one is here, one is at the boat (a very good cleaning cloth for shimmying down the sides of the boat!!) and one is in the cupboard to save for when one runs out.

Oh and the colours are acid bright - so lovely!!!!

Super Aldi Bargains!

You have to go into Aldi this month! Himself is a keen cyclist, I get tired just watching him, he usually does 15-20 mile a day (he's unemployed at the minute so has got the time!) He's cycled so much in the last month or so, the poor bike has begun to fall apart!

So on needing a new back wheel, we scoured the tip!! Found a bike with a suitable wheel, paid £8 and took it home - bike mended! But what happens with you need to buy new stuff for the cycle? There's Halford's as a first choice I guess... but when we looked for the wheel it was £45 !! So Halfords is not first choice for us.

How about Aldi? Did you know they did cycles stuff? Me neither!

Today, on a little spending spree, he bought a gel saddle £3.99 !! a bike computer £12.99 and a double foot pump for only £4.99

Of course, he will be rigourously trying and testing these for your benefit, and we'll report on the site soon.

Firstly, the foot pump.....

Double Cylinder Foot Pump for just under a fiver! As a none technical female I will read from the box and tell you it has a precision analogue guage for pressure up to 10 bar, 100cm pressure hose and three adapters. Whatever that all means.

Himself likes it a lot and his bike his fully pumped up tires, as does mine, both boys bikes and even the two spare visitor bikes.... It's looks like bloomin Halfords in our garage!

The pumps main benefit is the rugged metal foot plate, Himself showed me his old pump which has sort of squished under the weight of his foot after the years of use. This one will be hard pressed to ever squish - even under a tonne truck it looks so rugged!

You know when you buy something for £4.99 and you think - this is soooo gonna not work very well? I must admit, the price made me think this - but we are both pleasantly surprised! The pump now has its own hook in the garage.

I'm hoping tomorrow's forecasted rain will stay away and he can get out on the bike to test the saddle and computer too!

The Daily Laugh more like!

Well, I have seen it all now! Check out http://www.thedailyplate.com/ "Helping you eat smarter" says the cheesy Americanism of a strapline.

I stumbled across this waste of a space website, as I had shamefully eaten a pack of Dolly Mixtures, bad me, and was trying to find out their calorie content to add to my little book of eats at the end of today. I'm trying, and failing to lose weight....

So I look up Dolly Mixtures and it says they are 90 calories per 25g. Oh dear.....Oh well too late now I think.

But....wait, what's this? The website gives you alternatives, how helpful I think... read on...

"You could try these healthy alternatives to Dolly Mixtures to consume fewer calories" and they are listed below:

Tenderstem Broccoli

Seafood Sticks

Artichoke Hearts in water

and the list continues.

What idiot compiled this list? Yes, here I am sat at my desk at work, knowing I should not be eating Dolly Mixtures but somehow have one of those sweet urges you cannot deny....you know?

So which dipstick at thedailyplate.com thinks that I will stop eating my Dolly Mixtures and tuck into a tree of Broccoli???

It beggars belief what passes as a decent website these days!

Top Saving Tips from Lee

Become a penny pincher with these top saving tips from our friend Lee Parkin at Kensington Financial Management Consultants:

Budget - Set an agreed budget and DO NOT deviate from it. If it helps, set up a simple Excel sheet to calculate all your outgoings and log every single item purchased, right down to coffees and snacks – you’ll learn a lot from this!

Plan – Make a list of birthdays, anniversaries and other celebrations and allocate a budget for gifts and parties. Set aside some cash from your salary each month so that you are armed and ready to spend. Don’t leave gift buying until the last minute, it leads to panic buying, which can be costly.

Research - Kensington Financial Management Consultants do not endorse or encourage credit cards but do understand they are sometimes required. If you can’t do without, invest some time into finding one with the lowest interest rates, with an extended interest free period and even one that provides cash back on purchases or points on things you wish to purchase.

Work – Taking a second job in the evenings or at weekends can really boost your income plus with less time on your hands you’re less likely to spend.

Switch your current account - An overdraft is one of the most convenient ways to borrow a bit of extra cash at the end of the month, but it can be expensive. A number of high street banks have recently hiked their overdraft rates - and charges for unauthorised borrowing are extortionate. Customers rarely switch their current account because they think it’s a hassle. But nowadays it’s very straightforward and your new bank will do much of the work.

Save whilst you spend - We all have our Tesco Clubcard/Sainsbury's Nectar Card/Somerfield Saver, in fact many major retailers are now offering loyalty cards, which provide a great way of saving throughout the year without actually paying out extra.

Give up something - Giving up one of your little luxuries can result in a significant saving over time. Giving up your daily latte, Friday night pizza or costly cigarettes could save a small fortune – open a savings account and add the money to it each week, that way you’ll feel extra virtuous!

Surf the World Wide Web – There are numerous websites offering voucher codes for special offers and discounts on various items from cheap meals to discount on gifts. They’re there for the taking, so snap them up! The Internet also has pages of competitions that are free to enter and you could find yourself with anything from a crate of wine to a brand new car.

Dress to impress – Host or look out for clothes-swapping parties in your area, also known as ‘swishing’. This is a cost-effective way to give yourself a quick fashion makeover and declutter your wardrobe.

Tried and tested – In your spare time you can take part in paid-for surveys or product trials – these don’t take long to do and you will usually receive vouchers or cash as an incentive for taking part. Kensington Financial Management Consultants undertake lots of surveys where respondents are entered into prize draws – if you would like to be part of their survey team please e-mail pr@kensingtonfinance.co.uk or call 0161 850 0565

Go the ‘extra’ mile – If you want to claim your place in the hall of fame, look into opportunities for roles as an ‘extra’ for local TV and film production companies – a fun and flexible way to earn some extra cash.

The Great Outdoors – You can save money by cancelling your gym subscription and taking up walking, jogging or cycling. The fresh air will do you the world of good – its great for your mental and physical well-being, and your bank account will feel the benefit too!

Save face – Research the best deals on ISAs and set up a standing order to transfer the money as soon as you are paid every month. You won’t notice it leaving your account, but you will always have a back up in case of emergencies. Remember, an ISA offers a tax free way of saving, so you end up with the full interest being added to your savings rather than giving a portion of it to the tax man.

Shopping around – The Internet makes it so easy to compare prices. Think about it, if you needed a new boiler installing you’re likely to get at least three quotes in before you decide to buy, so why should your weekly shop or annual holiday be any different? There is a multitude of price comparison websites out there that cost you absolutely nothing but can save you a great deal.

Buy in bulk - The supermarkets offer some great deals when you buy in bulk, such as ASDA offering 3 crates of larger for just £20. It makes financial sense to buy essential items, such as toilet rolls, tin foil, tea bags and washing powder in bulk, as you know these are items you will always use. Buying in bulk is by far cheaper than popping to the off license or corner shop each evening. Remember though, don’t be seduced and only buy the things you need. Plus, if you have limited storage space – shop with a friend and share out the bulk buys!

Shines like a new boat

I read a press release recently – it said “Do cruddy cookers make you queasy and soiled surfaces send a shiver down your spine? OK, so he's not a fully qualified medical GP, but Doktor Power from JML can cure almost all your cleaning ailments without the need for drastic surgery! This safe, environmentally friendly and totally biodegradable paste has a pleasant citrus smell. Doktor Power will make quick and easy work of greasy ovens, dirty hobs, messy worktops, filthy shoes, scaly tiles, grimy car alloys, dull gold and silver – virtually anything! The non-acidic and non-abrasive formula makes it the ideal universal cleaner – from kitchen to bathroom; inside to outside; windows to plastics; garden furniture to motorcycles and bikes - there’s no need for separate cleaners or elbow grease. Simply use the special applicator sponge to rub the paste in a circular motion on the desired area and then rinse with cold water or polish with a cloth, leaving almost any surface sparkling clean. Doktor Power is the answer to all those stubborn stains, marks and grime. It’s probably the best cleaning paste ever made! The good doctor is available for cleaning consultations in all major outlets now –ASDA, Debenhams, Wilkinson and http://www.jmldirect.com/ - and costs just £4.99.”

So let’s call that the science bit, and get on with product testing...

As regular readers know, we have a boat. Of late the boat has been attracting dirt like a magnet, and looked quite shabby really. We hate that !! We prefer it when the boat looks like new – of course!

I took a tub of Doktor Power to the boat, in the lid is a little scrubby cleaner, you swish this in water and dampen the white power cleaner below, before the water is added it looks like chalk, or just a hard dry piece of gunk really! When the water was added, the white goo foamed up and became a little cleaning miracle. Working on the front of the boat, was hard work, and did require elbow grease (probably on less stubborn stains and indoors it would take less work) but the results were really good!

Whilst I was cleaning I could not really see a difference, but my goodness, when I stood back – I needed my sun glasses – no kidding!

We can recommend this product – especially if you have a boat as your pride and joy!

Defrosting the freezer, what a fab job...

NOT!

Blimey I hate defrosting the freezer, trouble is the top shelf was so frozen up we would have had difficulty freezing one After Eight Mint in the gap left - that is if we wanted to freeze and After Eight, which we wouldn't as chocolate never lasts that long in this house....

Sorry I'm rambling now, it's what comes fo sitting on a sunday afternoon vegging on the sofa after Sunday lunch.

Anyway this morning consisted of cooking the lunch and then defrosting the freezer, what a busy bee I've been. Whilst said freezer was doing its bit, and generally leaking water all over the floor where I'd placed bath towels... I decided to clean all the drawers.

They now look like new! It's this new Ecover stuff I've got. I used Ecover Multi Surface cleaner, and I love it! They do actually look new now! You only need a little sprayed on too.

The stuff contains alcohol and citric acid and water and that's basically it ! So no nasties to get into the water cycle and poison the little fishies... I'm impressed with the whole range so far!

Oh he thinks he's so funny......

Are there any other women out there who would like to receive flowers from their man...but don't? Yep, I can hear you all crying YES!! now.. Himself and I have been together for a while now.

When he met my sister for the first time, he bought her flowers....when it's mother's day his step-mum gets.... flowers....When we visit friends for a dinner party he says "shall we take flowers?" But when it comes to me - "Waste of money, they die, you don't really want them do you?" So I remain bloomless, well until I go to Tesco and just drop a bunch in the trolley to buy for myself.

So what's he done today, to really take the biscuit? I'm having a hard time at work at the moment and need cheering up, so you think he's trotted off to Interflora? Broken his rule of floweres die, they never last, it's a waste of money?

Or has he, true to form, gone for the joke...

I have just opened the door to the delivery guy. And found a single red rose.... in a presentation box, and I burst out laughing!!

Why you ask?

It's a sock! Well a pair of them obviously cos one would be silly. A pair of red socks carefully crafted into a stunning red rose. What a hoot!

For a man who never buys flowers, and who likes useful presents it's great, and continues our joke together too - which of course has had me laughing with him and hugging him and generally feeling much better.

And Himself adds...."They won't die like flowers either."

For the purpose of writing on here I had to look up where they are from, which is http://www.babyblooms.co.uk/, and they are £8.00 - and totally organic too.

What more could you ask for?

New mums or their friends should also take a look at the site too. Free delivery in July ensures the budget concious can buy a fabulous bouquet for baby along the same lines. From what I can see the baby bouquets begin at £24.00 and contain not only socks, but hats, bibs baby grows etc, all moulded into flower shapes and made into bouquets with silk flowers and leaves.

What a great idea! I'm now thinking through all my friends for anyone I think may announce pregnancy news soon.... (sadly none of them) cos the photos on the site just make you want to buy one!!

Oh lordy better get offline, feeling broody seeing all the little socks and things.... logging off now!!

Thursday, 9 July 2009

I can see clearly now the smears have gone...

It's a rare moment that catches me spending money, well no I mean more money than I need to. But on this occasion its paid off. My usual window and glass cleaner is no more than a pound, but requires much scrubbing, rubbing and smear removal - you could say all in all a good work out!

So when someone recommended I try Ecover (at aroudn £2.50) I was yet to be convinced. However, with eco principles intact off I went to discover for myself.

Stop press - it works!!

My usual trick for window cleaning involves getting Himself to do it, whilst I oooh and ahhhh - you know, to encourage window cleaning prowess... It helps men to offer encouragement, especially in housework, they feel all macho and like they are looking after you.

So off he went with Ecover Window and Glass in one hand and only kitchen towel in the other, I thought there goes Mr Streaky!! Streaky for the smears on the window I mean - not like he was going to clean naked, blimey that would scare the neighbours!

Anyhow I digress... Himself was heard to say "This is the BEST window cleaner I have ever used!" Now he considers himself a bit of a connoisseur of all cleaning products... so this is high praise indeed!

Containing alcohol, citric acid and water as its main ingredients it kind to your hands, but also kind to nature and doesn't put lots of horrid stuff into the water system, which is nice. Would being 'eco' make it worth the extra money for me, well yes as it works so much better! If it worked just the same as our under £1 one then maybe I would need to think again.

The packaging makes you feel very tree huggy and planet saving, nice and plain, but expensive looking at the same time. It's nice to have the set of cleaning products all lined up in the cupboard.

....Ahhh did I say all the range lined up? Yes OK, when it worked SO well we went out and got other things in the range, can't wait to try them now!! Watch this space for more news!

Green fingers - more like black!

Phew - just spent two hours in the garden - must have worked off some calories (I hope!!)

There's an offer on at the Oundle Garden Centre - The Barn on Barnwell Road, http://thebarngardencentre.co.uk/oundle.htm - buy 4 perrenials and 5th free - YAY! So just spent a happy old time digging and planting. I've got Lavender, Lupins, Delphiniums, Holly Hocks and a big pink skiey thing I can't recall the name of!

Happy days in the sun!

My fingers are now attrocious though so if anyone knows any good nail rescue remedies let me know! I'm hoping himself will be nicely surprised by the new front garden, after all I have left him room for planting his Pampass Grass - even though I hate the stuff!

Must rush off now, really, really need to get in the bath - yuk!

Lovely PRs

Hey - we're now a little famous and a few PRs want to send in items for us to review online. It's great news that we're now getitng noticed out there and people are visiting the blog....

We do want to keep it real though and I just want to add a little note about press releases, by all means email them to us, but we'll never add a press release to the site. I want our readers to be assured that we won't promote anything we've not tried ourselves.

We do love to review stuff though, whether its found in Tesco, picked up at Aldi, discovered at the local garden centre or yes... even posted to us by a PR !! We don't mind. But we always check out the item ourselves first.

So readers be assured we won't recommend anything we don't like....

I have to say so far in the shopping sprees around Northampton my favourite product has been the Dishmatic, but if you want to suggest something you think we will like better, go ahead!!

Link !!

Arrghh....!! I tried so hard to upload this clip but giving up now, it just won't work for me - hands up who hates technology eh?

All I can do is say follow this URL and see how you get on http://www.itv.com/lifestyle/thismorning/homeandgarden/bikes/default.html

I feel all inadequate now :-(
